When I’m not biking, I’m thinking about …

OK, I’m thinking about a lot of things:
— The rugged, rural roads I’ve been riding with Bill Clark, a fellow professor at AUBG. (see pics)
— The life Melody Gilbert and I left behind, which seems more distant by the day.
— Except for those moments when I think of our daughter, Jenna, and how much we miss her. But also how pleased we are with the kind of person she is.
— How lucky we are to have Skype.
— The challenges of adjusting my, um, system to a foreign diet. I believe I’m generating some new bacteria that will serve me well in the future. It’s just that they’re not serving me well now. If that borders on TMI, my apologies. What’s the saying? What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger? We’ll see about that …
— About how much I miss a proper EPA or IPA beer…. Still searching.
— Teaching my class: My first attempt at teaching journalism, especially in a foreign country, has been a challenge. But I’m holding my own. Big thanks, though, are due to the following people: the incomparable Bob Franklin, Paul Klauda, Howard Sinker, Gayle Golden, Ron Nixon, IRE — and the expert of classroom management, Melody Gilbert. She’s the best.
— The warm days, the cool nights and the natural beauty (paired with the chaos) that is Bulgaria. Stunning place, fascinating, warm and generous people. We’re still basking in the glow of the good in this place. I’m sure the shine will come off eventually, but it’s not happening soon.
— Speaking of that: We took a day trip to Bansko yesterday. It’s about 50 km south of us. Wow. What I mean is WOW! If you don’t know about it, haven’t heard of it, check it out. Especially the photo galleries. You’ll see what I mean.
— And a moment of silence and reflection for all those who die tragically, including today’s plane crash in Russia carrying a hockey team.

  1. MARK!
I guess you’re not in MN anymore! (Wizard of Oz)
It sounds totally scary and exciting.
The biking looks awesome……but all UPHILL. I would definitely like to come and visit and join you on a bike ride. I will have to start training harder, tho.
Hi to both you and Melody. What a wonderful adventure!

  2. Love the technology that allows us to stay close to you and Mel.

  3. Thanks, Mom.
